Solo Mt. Whitney Mtneers Route in the Shoulder
Location: Lone Pine, CA
Climbers: Brian
Date: Nov 10th-13th, 2016
Route: Mountaineers Route, III D3
Trip Summary: Mount Whitney in the summertime is a popular weekend expedition, whether it be the class 1 trail or the class 3 Mountaineers Route. - It’s one of the most popular peaks in the country, due to its beauty, accessibility and its status as the tallest peak in the Lower 48. However, on November 1st the permit lottery season ends and the Mountaineers Route turns into an alpine climbers wet dream. Snow, ice and low temperatures turn this talis and scree shoot into a steep snow couloir with consolidated and sometimes very hard snow, perfect pitch to sharpen your technical tools on.

Evolution Traverse: Practice Run
Location: Kings Canyon NP, CA
Climbers: Brian, Shannon, Brian, Kat
Date: July 3rd-7th, 2014
Route: Evolution Traverse VI, 5.9
Trip Summary: Peter Croft opens his description of this traverse by saying "This is the best traverse I have done". I would agree, but now we have to go finish it and see the rest of it. Brian, Kat, Shannon and I set off on the long weekend to attempt this ultra-classic. Unfortunately our time on the crest was cut short by weather.

June
Slabtastic Weekend: Royal Arches/Crest Jewel Link-up
Location: Yosemite Valley, CA
Climbers: Brian, Shannon
Date: June 7th, 2014
Route: Royal Arches (5.7), Crest Jewel (5.10a), Pole Position (5.10a)
Trip Summary: As one of the most popular link-ups in the valley, I had been eyeing this route and discussing it around camp fires for the past two years at least. Jeff and I were planning on knocking it out earlier in the season but couldn't get on it because of a waterfall flowing right down the center of the Royal Arches route. Shannon and I originally had this weekend planned out to climb the Tuolumne Triple (Tenya, Matthes, Cathedral) but found that there was too much snow up high.

May
Deuceldiked: First Blood Part II
Location: Yosemite Valley, CA
Climbers: Brian, Wells
Date: May 31st, 2014
Route: Deuceldike 5.9R(X), Half Dome South Face
Trip Summary: Last September Kat and I got gronked on Snake Dike when we started to far to the left and ended up simuling the route. We kept our cool and basically ended up soloing it. The moves were fun and literally breath-taking at times but I felt a death wish shouldn't be a prerequisite to climbing the route. Fast forward 9 months, Wells and I returned to the base with bolt kit in hand and made a 14 hour car to car push adding four bolts to the route, beefing up the single 1/4" bolt rust-job belays and adding one bolt to a pitch that had no protection for 200 feet.

Palisades Traverse: Spring Attempt
Location: Big Pine CA
Climbers: Brian, Shannon, Kat, Trevor
Date: May 23rd-25th 2014
Route: North Fork Big Pine Creek
Trip Summary: The plan was to go for the traverse again hoping for as little snow as possible in order to make it as safe as possible to move fast and unroped on the high craggy ridge linking the five peaks. Unfortunately 2 new feet of snow dumped on the range that Wednesday and we found some very snowy peaks when we arrived on Saturday. That didn't stop us from climbing however, and Shannon and I took off on Sunday morning for a successful climb up Thunderbolt Peak. It turned out to be a true alpine experience and great training for the high ranges.

FEBRUARY
North Palisade Traverse Winter Attempt
Location: Big Pine CA
Climbers: Brian, Shannon
Date: Feb 14th-17th 2014
Route: North Fork Big Pine Creek
Trip Summary: The plan was a winter ascent of the Thunderbolt Peak to Mt. Sill Traverse, however we had little knowledge of what the conditions would be and probably less ambition to push it if we found that they were bad. We made it just below Sam Mack Meadow where we found some serious trench warfare and then got shut down by unconsolidated snow over a talus field.

Climbers: Brian, Kat, Shannon, Joscelin
Date: January 17th-21st, 2014
Route: Unnamed Falls by 120 hwy bridge LVC, June Lake Roadside Falls
Trip Summary: With U-Notch/V-Notch ice out of condition, we settled for throwing everything in the car from bouldering pads to trad rack to ice gear and hit the road. We camped off of 120 just behind the Mobil with a great view of Dana and Mono Lake and stayed warm with a big campfire. On Saturday we hit up Lee Vining Canyon (LVC) climbing a number of routes on an unnamed waterfall all the way to the back of the canyon. With Shannon on the DL however, we opted for a hike on Sunday and hoofed it from Convict Lake up to Lake Mildred, giving us a view of North Couloir on Red Slate Mountain. On Monday, Kat and I hit up June Lake and found some amazing ice at the Roadside Falls.

Location: Yosemite Valley, CA
Climbers: Brian, Jeff
Date: Nov 1st-3rd, 2013
Route: Royal Arches, Nutcracker
Trip Summary: A busy weekend of crushing the classics and taking pure enjoyment from it. Even in the 30 degree lows, Jeff and I marched off into the black and started up the Royal Arches Chimney pitch in the pre-dawn light. We topped out on the 16 pitches by 1pm but the 21 rappels took us 2 1/2 hours. On the ground by 4pm, we joined Kat and family in El Cap Meadows for beers and a bask in the alpineglow on El Cap. Sunday night we were joined by friends, Diana & Erica. On Sunday the girls headed for some hard sport while Jeff and I lazily made our way up Nutcracker. What a fantastic weekend!

With the help of a seasoned partner, we managed to knock it out in a little over 7 hours and about 11 car to car with approach and descent. Truly a Yosemite classic

Location: Mickey's Beach, CA
Climbers: Brian, Kat, Wells, Davd, Karen
Date: Aug 30th
Route: Bouldering
Trip Summary: With the extra day off of work coming with the Labor Day weekend, the plan was to do the Thunderbolt Peak to Sill Traverse. Thunderstorms put those plans to bed at the last minute so the back-up plan was to climb the South Face of Washington's Column. Smoke from the Rim Fire put that one to rest in the 11th hour when we were literally looking up at the first pitch. With the climbing Gods against us, we thought "Let's go to the beach"!

Climbers: Brian, Pat, Thom, JZ
Date: June 8th-9th
Route: West Ridge
Trip Summary: The four of us met in Oakdale on the way to Tuolumne on Friday night to fuel up with gas and El Agave burritos. We made it to Tuolumne Meadows by 1am, rolled out a tarp and our bags and caught a few hours of sleep. We woke up at 4am and started out, heading to Sawmill, the trailhead. Later that night, Pat and I found ourselves huddling together under one emergency blanket at 11,000 ft with the wind periodically grabbing our space blanket as if it were a sail and letting us know just how cold the wind was.

Cathedral & Eichorn Pinnacle
Location: Tuolumne, Yosemite National Park, CA
Climbers: Brian, Pat, Kat, Azhar
Date: June 1st
Route: Cathedral to Eichorn
Trip Summary: An early season for Tuolumne climbing. Rumor was that the first pitch of Fairview was half covered in snow, but we couldn't have asked for a more perfect day out on Cathedral and Eichorn. Pat and I headed up the route and simul-climbed with about 100 of rope between us. We topped out and traversed over to Eichorn. I led the 5.4 pitch up Eichorn and I couldn't believe how scary the hand traverse was. I was trying to place minimal gear to minimize rope drag but still enough gear so Pat would't curse my name when following. The exposure was unreal and the top of the pinnacle was one of the best seats in Yosemite.

May
A Trip to Charlotte Dome
Location: Kings Canyon NP, CA
Climbers: Brian, Kat,
Date: May 25th-27th
Route: Fred Beckey route (5.8), Gardiner Pass
Trip Summary: If you're not familiar, Charlotte Dome is a beautiful 12 pitch 5.8 alpine climb in the high sierra's first climbed by Fred Beckey in 1970. It's also a 50 Classic Climb of North America. The hard part about the climb, however is that; it's challenging for the grade, route finding is tough, there's lots of run-out and you have to do a 12 mile hike in followed by a 2,300 ft scramble just to get to the base of the climb. Not to mention, you have to do the 2,300 ft scramble, 12 pitches of climbing, a 45 minute walk-off the back and then back down the 2,300 ft of fourth-class scrambling all in one day before it gets dark. Otherwise you're epiced and it's at a very high elevation and it gets very cold. And that's exactly what I've heard happen to a lot of friends and others that have attempted the climb.

A Big Weekend in the Valley (aka climbing a few pitches up The Real Nose with Steve Schneider)
Location: Yosemite Valley, CA
Climbers: Brian, Kat, Steve
Date: May 12th-14th
Route: The Real Nose, After Seven, The Grack, Le Conte
Trip Summary: What a huge weekend this was. My first time on El Cap and I get to follow a living legend no less. I got to follow A3+, practice lower-offs and work on general shenanigans on El Cap of all places. Then we did After Seven...after seven pm to hone our headlamp climbing skills, plus a bivy at the top of Manure Pile Buttress (don't tell). Kat's first multi-pitch trad lead up The Grack and then lots and lots of practice on the Le Conte Boulder.

April
A Night on Dinner Ledge
Location: Yosemite Valley, CA
Climbers: Brian, Kat
Date: April 13th-14th
Route: South Face of Washington's Column
Trip Summary: Kat and I decided to take a trip up the South Face of Washington's Column and what turned out to be the first night for both of us to sleep on a ledge. The hauling wore me out so much that the next morning, looking up at the Kor Roof, and feeling totally wiped out, we decided that the ledge was enough of an objective. However, having done the Le Conte Boulder a number of times since, I truly can't wait to lead the Kor Roof.

March
From Wisconcin to Yosemite
Location: Yosemite Valley, CA
Climbers: Brian, Linda, Al
Date: March 30th
Trip Summary: Linda came to visit for the week from Wisconsin and since she had never been to Yosemite (crazy I know) I thought it best that she got the guided tour from two of the best guides around; Al Smith and I. At the same time Al was itching like crazy to climb The Grack; one of the best 5.6 hand-cracks in the valley and probably anywhere. We woke up on Saturday morning to sunshine so we hiked from Upper Pines to the crack and had the crag all to ourselves. Linda took a nap in the sun while Al and I climbed. By the time we rapped down, the sky was looking grim. We grabbed our rain gear and made our way over to Yosemite Falls and entertained ourselves by jumping from rock to rock on the Merced River.

Backcountry in North Lake Tahoe
Location: Incline Lake, Nevada
Climbers: Brian, Kat, Pat
Date: February 22nd-23rd
Trip Summary: Kat, Pat and I headed up to Mt. Rose on Saturday morning. We parked, suited up and skinned up the trail. After about 20 minutes however, we all turned to one another and had a good discussion about how there was absolutely no snow on the ground. We turned around, headed back down the trail and ended up at Incline Lake which turned out to be a great day with two trips up and down. That night also so excitement with some night backcountry fun with a whiskey bladder.
